Joomla 1.5 Homepage Title – Joomla SEO

October 15, 2012

I’ve seen a lot of Joomla 1.5 sites recently where the homepage title is simply “Home”. Obviously this isn’t an ideal situation and you generally want your homepage title to include your best search term for the site. It’s very easy to fix though:

  • From your Joomla Admin Dashboard go to Menus > Main Menu
  • Click on the Home link in the table of menu items
  • In the right column, open the Parameters – System tab
  • Put your optimised title in the Page Title box
  • If you want your optimised title to be repeated on the home page above any article titles check the Yes button below for Display Page Title. Otherwise if you just want it to show in the browser title bar leave it at No
  • Save out of there and refresh your Joomla home page to find your optimised title right there in the browser title bar

It’s not just from an SEO point of view that you want that title to show up properly in Joomla. If a customer is searching for widgets and their search results present them with your site titled “Home” in the 1st position and yor competitor titled “Joe Brown’s Cheap Widget Warehouse” I think I know who’t going to get the click and the sale. So, if you are building a site in Joomla, make sure you get an optimised title on to the home page.

Sounds like it’s maybe not using .htaccess to generate the SEO friendly URLs. In Joomla Global config check both the Search Engine Friendly URL’s box and the use Apache mod_rewrite – and make sure you’ve renamed teh file htaccess.txt to .htaccess. (That’s if you’re using a compatible server).

Hi Dave, can you help with changing home page title in joomla 1.0 without using sh404?

Dave February 10, 2013 at 4:13 pm

I seem to remember I used the global configuration to set the homepage title in 1.0 and then used a mambot called Joofox Content Title to change the rest of the titles on the site. Might be mistaken though.

I’ve found a way out: i just changed the “home page” from a “component” to a usual “content” item. so i can edit the title tags.

This doesn’t work for me on Joomla! 1.5.11 with sh404SEF 1.0.20_Beta – build_237 – the browser title bar still shows ‘Home’ despite having set the title in the system tab as you describe. Any ideas?

This might be a bit late for Martin but if you’re using sh404SEF there’s a big button in the component admin for Homepage Title and another for Homepage Meta-tags.
